Should this book come with any content warnings? Eg some readers may find aspects distressing.

  • Possibly, as the story is written from the perspective of a fictional young woman during the time of Jesus’ life, and in the story she becomes his wife. This use of the biblical story to tell a story about the character Ana and her world may be uncomfortable for some readers.

The characters.

Who are the key characters?

  • The characters include: Ana herself, her family (including her half-brother Judas) and her beloved aunt; Jesus and his family (including siblings); those in positions of authority at the time; and those who live ordinary yet difficult lives during the time of Jesus

  • It is very clear the story is fictional but what the individuals experienced at the time appeared to be very real

Could you relate to any key character/s?

  • The sad and difficult plight of women at the time and how relevant it could be to women of today. Different issues in different times, but nonetheless issues women experience

Your opinions.

What did you like about the book?

  • The historical research was so clearly woven into the story to give a sense of reality

How did the book make you feel?

  • Inquisitive about what may well have taken place during the time of Jesus’ life

  • Feeling the pain Jesus felt leading up to his crucifixion

  • Though a story, the clear links to events documented at the time made for an alternative story to the one we have all come to know

  • A realistic portrayal of Jesus as a person

Your review of the publication:

The book is the story of Ana who was born in Galilee at a time when women were seen as possessions. The story is from the perspective of a young woman with abilities, wanting to control her own destiny in ways that were not available to women at the time. The simple ability to read, opened up so many more opportunities for Ana as a young woman in a very culturally controlled world, giving her a platform to speak for the women silenced at the time. The journey for Ana brings joy and tragedy and reveals the power women have, to change the world.
